Don’t let Oklahoma City’s lack of a coastline fool you: This Southern Plains metropolis is emerging as one of the best year-round destinations for water-loving travelers.

Riding the wave is the new OKANA Resort & Indoor Waterpark, a world-class destination (think 11-story hotel with 404 suites, each with a view) and bucket list-worthy waterpark that debuted in February. OKANA’s packed lineup of unique experiences make it a must-do for families and friends no matter the time of year – like a “fly pool” you can zipline over and drop into, an outdoor lagoon with a sandy beach, and plenty of indoor fun for the cooler months (or when you just need a break from the sun).

If you’re planning a getaway to The Big Friendly, here are five highlights to make the most of your visit – both in and out of the water.

Ride the Rides

Spend a day – or a few – exploring OKANA’s 200,000-square-foot outdoor OKANA Beach, including the fourth largest pool in America, that’s open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the resort’s 100,000-square-foot Splash Indoor Waterpark all year long.

Don’t let March and April’s cooler temps dampen your taste for adventure. At OKANA, waterpark goers can hang indoors to surf the FlowRider’s ocean-like waves, race down slides, float through a lazy river, hop across floating lily pads and bob in a wave pool. Wild Rapids, a water slide with roller-coaster speed, is the must-ride for thrill seekers. The indoor park also features play structures for kids (including the “Low Tide” area for younger guests) and an adults-only Soothing Springs warming pool where you can sink into built-in seating.

More rides beckon sunseekers at the outdoor OKANA Beach. One attraction you’ve probably never seen at a waterpark before is the “Zip and Dip”: Soar down a zipline before making a cinematic splash landing in a deep-water pool. Slides, a family-friendly pool surrounded by a sandy beach, a dive area that mimics the thrill of cliff diving, and “Bounce Bay,” and an inflatable obstacle course above water are among the other highlights of the outdoor waterpark. An adults-only pool and the Okasis swim-up bar are perks for the 21-and-up crowd.

Sample the Cuisine

With more than a dozen restaurants, bars and snack spots, there’s all kinds of good eats to try out while staying at OKANA. Pair tacos with margaritas at Chido (and save room for a dessert like sopapilla cheesecake), savor house-smoked barbecue at Smokehouse Social before hitting the links on the golf simulators or enjoy elevated comfort food at Jack Rabbit, the resort’s gastropub.

OKANA also has quick bite spots, including burgers or dogs at Sliders, Neapolitan pizzas from Pie Lab, sandwiches and salads from Market 56, Asian street food at Kaya and chicken dishes and lagoon views at Waterbyrd. Feeling something sweet? Check out OKANA Candy Co., which offers a wide range of candy and craft, premium ice cream from the Chocolate Shoppe.

Get Your Game On

Need a break from the waterpark? Hit up OKANARAMA!, OKANA’s 20,000-square-foot game hall with 100+ arcade games, a two-story laser tag, mirror maze and escape room. Then, head over to the Prize Parlor to cash in your tickets.

Treat Yourself to a Massage

OKANA isn’t just for thrill seekers. Guests can chill out in one of the resort’s luxury cabanas or book a treatment at the 6,000-square-foot spa. With its warm sand pouches and traditional Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi techniques, the resort’s 80-minute OKANA massage tops the list of ways to unwind in Oklahoma City.

This waterpark resort is the new and exciting draw to the city, but travelers can enrich their Oklahoma City itinerary with cultural experiences and outdoor urban adventures.

Tear Through Some Rapids

OKANA builds on Oklahoma City’s legacy of water sports and adventure. Travelers who want to take the experience to the next level can try the urban rafting experience at RIVERSPORTS Adventures OKC, paddling through Class II to IV rapids at Riversport Rapids. Other on-water adventures like surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking or tubing are also offered.

Check Out First Americans Museum

Located next door to OKANA, First Americans Museum showcases state-of-the-art exhibitions, offering museum-goers a unique experience to deepen their understanding of the 39 First American Nations in Oklahoma today.

Visitors can explore the 175,000-square-foot museum and its exhibits that include OKLA HOMMA, Chef Loretta’s Garden with edible plants like corn, tomatoes, and peppers indigenous to the Americas, and more.

The new waterpark resort complements the neighboring First Americans Museum, and, together, the development is designed to connect visitors to rich cultural and unique entertainment experiences along the Oklahoma River. In fact, OKANA’s name pays tribute to the legacy of the ancestors who lived in the area before it was Oklahoma: OKANA is derived from the Chickasaw Nation words for water (“oka’”) and friend (inka̱na’).
